Fibre Systems Europe - June 3 2008
A new class of optical transport equipment combines the
functionality of packet systems with WDM, giving carriers more choices than ever
before on how to build their next-generation networks. Roy Rubenstein
investigates the likely impact.
The inexorable rise in packet traffic has lead to the formation of an
entirely new category of optical transport equipment – and what is touted as the
most significant development in optical transport equipment since the invention
of the multiservice provisioning platform back in 1999. But while sales of the
new platform, dubbed optical packet transport, are forecast to more than double
each year up to 2012, the jury is still out as to whether such an integrated
platform is the best approach. |
